Webinar - It’s Not Always Sunshine and Lollipops: Communicating Challenges in Resumes and Proposals

Please register for APMP Canada - Maple Leaf Chapter webinar - It’s Not Always Sunshine and Lollipops: Communicating Challenges in Resumes and Proposals on Tuesday, October 24, 12:00 to 1:00 pm Eastern, 2:00 pm Atlantic, 10:00 AM Pacific, 11:00 Mountain.

Description: In most requests for proposals, the customer wants to know where the company has done similar work before (past performance) and what the company did that will help meet their requirements and objectives (relevant experience). When you’re applying for a new gig, companies want to know the same things about you. That’s the point of the resume and interview!

In the Experience Section, you can’t just skip over issues like missed deadlines, or poor performance, and as your career progresses, you can’t just skip over short stays, layoffs, or (shudder) a termination for performance.

To be effective, both the Experience Section and your resume need to reflect the lessons you’ve learned along the way, even if everything hasn’t been all “sunshine and lollipops”.

In this webinar, Mark Wigginton will talk about how to communicate the challenges you’ve overcome in your resume, and in an interview ... and maybe even talk a little about how to do the same in a proposal!

Presenter: Mark Wigginton markw@focusingonresults.com

About The Presenter: Mark Wigginton is a Certified Professional Coach and Licensed Professional Counselor, but more important, he is a proposal pro who has helped his clients win billions of dollars in business. His journey to the proposal world included well over 40 jobs before he landed at Shipley Associates, so he gets communicating the value of a “multi-faceted career mosaic” and lessons learned along the way.  He recently retired from Shipley after 20 years and is on to his next adventure coaching business professionals as they explore their goals and identify their real value.

Mark is APMP certified as both a Bid/Proposal and Capture Practitioner. He has presented to APMP conferences and chapters since 2003 and will be presenting at the APMP Capture and Business Development Conference (CBDC) in November. The Why, When and How for Proposal Automation Software

APMP Canada - Maple Leaf Chapter - The Why, When and How for Proposal Automation Software was held on Thursday, March 23, 2023 12:00 PM  |  (UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada)  |  1 hr

Description:

APMP members are well aware of the challenges associated with creating winning proposals. While many proposal professionals recognize the potential benefits of proposal software, a surprising number of organizations have yet to implement such solutions. The reasons for this vary. Some organizations simply do not understand how to cost justify the solution, while others are overwhelmed by the vast array of proposal software options available on the market.

This is precisely why Jason Anderson from Expedience Software has offered to share his extensive knowledge of the proposal automation industry. As an experienced Proposal Manager, Jason has successfully advocated for the implementation of proposal software solutions in a variety of organizations. During this webinar, he will share his tried and tested process for doing so.

It is important to note that while Jason does work for a proposal software vendor, this presentation will not serve as a sales pitch for Expedience Software. Rather, attendees can expect to receive valuable insights and strategies for overcoming common obstacles associated with proposing and implementing proposal software solutions.

Register today to gain the knowledge and tools needed to successfully advocate for the implementation of proposal software solutions.

Presenter:

Jason Anderson is a sales and proposal strategist, a technology advocate, and a seasoned professional proposal professional. Webinar - Crafting Project Narratives with Anchors: Why Weight Is Good & When to Shed It

Please Register for APMP Canada - Maple Leaf Chapter - Crafting Project Narratives with Anchors: Why Weight Is Good & When to Shed It on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at 12:00 PM Eastern Time / 9:00 AM Pacific / 10:00 AM Mountain / 11:00 AM Central / 1:00 PM Atlantic

Fellow logophiles and colleagues Sarah and Deb will share how their backgrounds in writing, rhetoric, and linguistics inform their approach to crafting project narratives. (Yep, narratives not descriptions.) Sarah will discuss storytelling, and Deb will discuss anchoring. Together, these components create chunks that technical experts, lay audiences, and overburdened proposal reviewers can easily process. To what end? Anchored narratives satisfy readers, and satisfied readers are more likely to do what you ask. Who doesn’t want wins in their buckets? While Sarah and Deb won’t be answering that question, their session will help get more wins in yours.

You will leave Sarah and Deb’s session knowing how to:

  • Choose anchors your audience can notice.

  • Shape project narratives around anchors.

  • Release anchors so your audience can move on.

Sarah Reynolds Westin loves stories. She believes that constructing them requires as much (if not more) brainpower than hard and soft sciences—and comes with a side of artistic license and fulfilling joy. Knowing that everyone has stories to tell and that telling them well is key prompted her to earn two graduate degrees: an MA in English and an MFA in Creative Writing & Literary Arts. Sarah now crafts texts that speak directly to clients informed by the narrative genre. But you might wonder how storytelling applies to proposals. “Everything’s a story,” Sarah will tell you. “The fun part is getting people to listen to the end.” Her session, co-presented with Deb Castillo, will teach you how to craft a story that keeps, interests, and motivates your proposal reviewers.

Does anyone expect their career could unravel their graduate thesis’s argument? No. However, Deb Castillo will tell you that she faces this reality. Her expertise lies in how people process unfamiliar language by using anchors, such as sounds, symbols, context, and even literary devices. Every day, her colleagues—her company's technical experts and scientists—unknowingly challenge her thesis. They rely on jargon and lists that often bring up more questions than answers. Fortunately, Deb’s argument is well-founded. With a patient approach, she transforms their technical ideas into stories that laypersons and proposal reviewers can easily understand and score. Alongside Sarah Reynolds Westin she’ll teach you how to identify or create anchors that ground your proposal reviewers.

On the competitive BBQ circuit, winning requires careful planning and consistent execution built on a deep understanding of what judges expect to see and taste. Successful teams start early; they look for the best sources of meats, they taste a variety of spices and sauces, they test different woods. They don't ad-lib their process. Winning BBQ teams are disciplined... and so are winning capture executives. This session discusses best practices that can improve both your win rate and ability to perform - and smoke your competition.

APMP Canada - Maple Leaf Chapter - How to Think Like the Solicitation Issuer

APMP Canada - Maple Leaf Chapter - How to Think Like the Solicitation Issuer on Wednesday, 23 Jun, 2021 12:00 pm | 1 hour | (UTC-04:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada).

Details:

A firm understanding of the RFP, specifically the PWS, SOW, or SOO, is essential to crafting a compliant, winning proposal. The issuer of a solicitation really wants to see responses that add value while mirroring the nuances, language, terminology, and so forth in their RFP documents. To do this, you need to "get into" the issuer's head, and structured RFP analysis is a proven technique to do so.

Presenter's Bio:

Janet Arrowood has been a writer, technical editor, and writing trainer for over 35 years. Ms. Arrowood is a mathematician by degree, an engineer by training, and a writer by profession. She specializes in training professionals, engineers, and contract specialists in “how to write in plain English.”

Ms. Arrowood has been a presenter for NIGP’s 2020 and 2021 Learning Labs and the 2020 Virtual Conference. She has also presented on procurement and professional development at NCMA in 2018 and 2019. Janet Arrowood is the author of the Rowman & Littlefield book, Plain Language, Please: How to Write for Results. She is an international author, speaker, and trainer. Her small business-focused columns appear twice a month in the Grand Junction Business Times.

APMP Canada - Maple Leaf Chapter - Minimize Burnout

APMP Canada - Maple Leaf Chapter - Minimize Burnout on Thursday, 25 Mar, 2021 12:00 pm | 1 hour | (UTC-04:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada)

Details:

Burnout and proposal manager often go hand in hand when describing what we do … but there are ways to minimize it and tricks we can all use to help us through those crazy times.

Join me as I revisit the presentation done during the October Global BPC conference with some updates based on learnings through COVID. I may not have all of the answers but it never hurts to remind ourselves that we have tools in our own toolbox to take care of ourselves while continuing to do this crazy job we love!

Presenter's Bio:

Krysta Cadden is a Practitioner-level accredited proposal manager with over 20 years of experience in the field. Like many, she ‘fell’ into this crazy world when someone asked her if she was up for the challenge of starting a proposal center. Not having any idea what she was in for – she said ‘sure’ … and the rest is history. Most of her career was spent managing large, complex bids in the telecommunication sector. The last 8 years have been spent at LHH (formerly LHH Knightsbridge), a talent management company / professional services firm. She lives in Halifax with her family and loves being near the ocean and the amazing people and lifestyle Nova Scotia offers.
